Fantasy Pitch: Sisters in the Sky

by Joel on 9 juni, 2011

This is my entry in the third installment of the Hollywood Fantasy Draft hosted by Anomalous Material. To learn more about the draft please visit this pre-pitch post about the event and some background on why I choose this story for my pitch.

Sisters in the Sky

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow

Anna Svendsen (Amy Adams) was one of few female squadron leaders in the flying forces but is now working as a test-pilot after being degraded after a failed mission. She is married to Jeffrey.

Linn Svendsen (Blake Lively) is Annas younger sister. She works as a clerk at General Mcallisters office. She was taught how to fly by her and Annas dad Michael and we learn that one of the reasons she’s stuck on the ground besides being a female is that she has a hot-head when being in the cockpit.

Jeffrey Gordon (Gerard Butler) is the Red Baron of the Allied Forces being their top-pilot and squadron leader. Jeffrey is married to Anna.

Trinity Vanbeclere (Nathalie Portman) is Annas mechanic.

Gretchen Skreck (Noomi Rapace) is the Nazi counterpart to Jeffrey. She also goes by the infamous nickname the Deathrose from Celle. Her plane is tattooed with thirteen black roses. One for every plane she has shot down during battle.

General Mcallister (Timothy Dalton) the highest ranking officer for the allied forces. His main agenda besides winning the war is to keep women out of his planes.

Lidyia Litvinov (Milla Jovovich) is a Russian fighter pilot that has defected and is an eminent part of Jeffrey’s squadron.

Vince Drury (Paul Walker) is a washed out alcoholic airplane mechanic working together with Trinity.

Major Sheila Brennan (Sigourney Weaver) is a World War One fighter pilot veteran is a prominent part of Mcallister’s staff and she’s his counterpart when it comes to who shall fly his planes.

Michael Svendsen (Christian Bale) is Anna and Linns late father. He fought as a fighter pilot in world war one and flew together with Major Brennan. After the war he became one of the first flying crop-dusters in the US. When the girls were small he used to take them with him in his plane learning them how to fly. He died in a flight accident 7 years before the film when Linn was 15 years old.

The Plot

ACT 1

The film starts out with Jeffrey leading his squadron of Mustangs in battle with the Nazis when Gretchen Shreck appears. After a long dogfight she kills Jeffrey by exploding his engine. Lydia who is the sole survivor of Jeffreys squadron makes it back to the base. At the base Anna finds out what has happened and is devastated. Anna takes out her Anger on Trinity by forcing her to replace all the bolts in her training plane. Vince shows up saying he has been transferred to her hangar.

Linn is trying to get back on the flying rooster by convincing Sheila and Mcallister. In that scene we find out in a flashback that the reason she was sidelined was because a hot-head move she pulled during a mission that actually caused them to fail and one of her co-pilots got killed because of it. Anna who was the squadron leader in that mission made sure Linn was side lined but Anna also got canned as squadron leader and was demoted to test pilot because of that mission. When Linn has left them Sheila tries to convince Macallister by saying that she has never seen such a talented pilot as Linn neither male or female and that she flew with her father in wolrd war one. Mcallister ends the discussion by saying that he cant have rouge fighters in the air.

ACT 2

Vince and Trinity tries to get along in the hangar but its obvious that they don’t get along. We find out that Trinity is a very experienced mechanic while Vince more or less is an alcoholic.

Now we see a montage of Gretchen killing of fighter pilots in dogfights, attacking and destroying transport convoys and submarines.

Its obvious that the alliance are running short on pilots and Sheila tries to convince Mcallister that they should get Anna back on her squadron since she is the far most experienced of the ones that are left. Mcallister refuses. We find out that Vince has been through some rough times because his wife was killed by the Nazis and he tells Trinity about his daughter Lindsey who now lives with her grandparents. Its obvious that Trinity is on her way to change her mind about him.

Another attacking montage where Gretchen is seen leading a bomb raid on London. In that dogfight the last big squadrons are eliminated. Mcallister realizes that they are running out of people and that they need to do something about Gretchen. Sheila convinces him that they need to bring back Anna to lead a squadron of fighters. Anna is approached with this but she is still devastated for the loss of Jeffrey and says she can’t do it. Sheila then goes to Linn and says that she must talk Anna into it. Linn finds Anna sitting at the shore and she tells Anna about the moment when their dad taught her that hot-head stunt that she did in the earlier flashback. We see an emotional flashback when Linn sits in Michaels lap as a 7-year-old while he is doing a dangerous run while looping repeatedly in both directions. They reunite in the memory of Michael and Anna goes to talk to Mcallister.

Anna tells Mcallister that she will fly again and they offer her a bunch of co-pilots all being really young and unexperienced boys. We see a quick training montage of how bad pilots they are. Anna tells Mcallister that she wont work under these conditions and that she needs to name her own crew. After getting reports about Gretchen attacking another submarine Anna gets her way. The first name on her list is Linn. Macallister gets furious but realize its the only way to go.

Trinity and Vince finally gets a moment together when he helps her with a plane engine that she couldn’t fix. She finally manages to see beneath his surface when they are about to kiss they are interrupted by Anna. Anna comes to ask Trinity to fly with her she says that they have elaborated a trap for Gretchen that will take place in within a week. Since trinity is the only person she trusts after Jeffrey was killed Anna wants her on the squadron. Trinity tells her that she should have thought about that when she had her replace all the bolts on the plane. Anna finally get what she has done earlier and walks away but Trinity runs after her and says she’ll do it.

Trinity starts training to fly and we get a lengthy training montage with her in simulated flying and flying with smaller planes while Vince is supporting her. Anna, Linn, Mcallister and Sheila has a sit down with Lidya who survived Gretchens attack that killed Jeffrey. Lidya tells them that Gretchen has no weaknesses and that she fought her when being back in Russia as well with similar devastating results. Lidya becomes the fourth girl in the squadron. They will go for a sneak attack on Gretchen who is escorting a train which is carrying a neutron bomb that is to be used on the Russians.

On the day of the mission Trinity and Vince finally get their romantic moment. He says that he will be waiting for her no matter what the outcome of the battle is before they kiss in the sunset. When the girls rende vouz at the air strip they are greeted by Sheila in her jumpsuit she will also be joining the mission.

ACT 3

They go off on the mission and after some jumpy moves from unexperienced Trinity they finally encounter Gretchen. A long dogfight occurs where Anna and Lidya kills of two of Gretchens wing-men but Gretchen kills Sheila. Anna realizes that the only way to stop Gretchen is if Linn can pull off her hot-head stunt. She tells Linn to go ahead with it while she and Lidya covers her. Trinity keep track of the train that has been damaged during the battle and is running free. Linn visualizes her memory of Michael and pulls of the stunt which sets Gretchen up for Anna and Lidya who both dive on her and finally killing her off in a large explosion.

They get Intel from Macallister who tells them that they have to stop the train which is now heading towards the polish labor camps to be detonated. Their only chance to stop it is by blowing up a bridge that the train will pass over. The water will contain and limit the damage of the neutron bomb. Anna is the only one that still has a bomb on board. When she does her dive she realizes that the release mechanism has malfunctioned. The only way to stop the train is for her to dive into the tracks detonating the bomb. She gives an empowering speech directed to each and one of them before telling Linn that their dad would have been proud of her. Anna dives toward the track and detonates the bomb causing the train to drown in the river.

The final scene is Vince running towards Trinity’s plane when she has landed and lifting her up in the sky. Macallister is also on the airstrip greeting Linn: ”You want to teach us that move kiddo?”.

THE END

Finally! I’ve been waiting for your pitch, Joel. Glad to see you are including all THREE of my fave actors into one movie!! I have to read your plot in detail later on but I like it so far… and I like the fact that Gerry plays Amy Adams’ husband. Nice choice of photo, too, ehm….

I thought it was a good picture of him due to my angle on the film. I wonder if you still like it after having read what happens in the beginning?

I finally managed to find a good place for Christian Bale in the movie. I struggled with it for quite a while but in the end that addition is probably the one I’m mostly pleased with.

I was just about to say,Ruth will watch this movie ;)

Wow Joel. I wasn’t expecting this type of pitch and I enjoyed it. I would’ve liked to see a few more flight fight sequences with Anna before her encounter with Gretchen, but you explain why she refuses to fly very well. and I now understand how Bale’s character worked to be the father! Great work and tribute to the female fighter pilots! Unique and I think they would be honored to see this movie.

I agree with you that it probably would be a better narrative to let her face of with Gretchen several times but I had a hard time incorporating it. One solution could have been to have Anna fly in Jeffrey’s squadron when he gets killed. hmmm I just came with a somewhat tacky version what about Linn and Anna flies with Jeffrey in the beginning and its Linn’s failed manoveur that gets Jeffrey killed?

Thanks for the nice words. I’m glad you liked it. It has become somewhat of a pet project after seeing that art installation and if I ever get the chance to produce something bombastic this would be a candidate project.

Extremt underhållande bara att läsa, hur måste det inte vara att se filmen?! Har du läst Wilbur Smiths The Burning Shore?

Svara

Joel Burman juni 11, 2011 kl. 11:51

Ex. Liv Tyler i Armageddon eller Kate Beckinsdale i Pearl Harbour.

You set this up nice. Great cast of right on the pulse actors and the girl-power element is a plus. It seems like you covered all the bases with this. Great job!

Svara

Joel Burman juni 12, 2011 kl. 09:22

Ah thanks Colleen! I actually just tried to reverse the typical roles by swapping genders.

Svara

Castor juni 12, 2011 kl. 10:04

Although I read your footnote, this is still pushing the limits of credibility ahah :P

Is this set during WWII or is this some imaginary war? If we are talking WW2, fighters don’t actually attack submarines! (they don’t have the range and submarines can easily go underwater when they hear the planes coming). Also, well there was no such thing as a neutron bomb back then ;p

I think Gerard Butler’s character dies too early, with no introduction to his character or anything. He can die in the first act but there needs to be some exposition of the settings:
- When, where is this set?
- Who are the main characters?
- etc…

Another potential issue is that there doesn’t seem to have much going on at least through the first two acts. Something you can expand on, is the training of the women pilots. The story needs more of a journey of where they started and where they ended up.

Svara

Joel Burman juni 12, 2011 kl. 10:48

I love that you are so serious about this.

Yes its set in WW2. In Das Boot they get attacked by bombers and fighters all the time so I buy that Gretchen could be all over the place causing havoc.

Butler is a Janet Leigh/Drew Barrymore set-up where we are supposed to believe he is the main guy. I guess he can be described better or get killed later on but I decided to have total focus on the girls that’s why I chose this route.

Setting? I totally agree on this, its the thing I would have needed to do more research on. Preferably some kind of airbase that can reach many of the most important battles.

The main characters I think are quite clear. Anna, Linn, Trinity are the three main ones. The hard thing is to keep it below three hours because it could easily be that kind of epic story… hahah

I agree on the first two acts. This is something that needs to be fixed on synopsis level. As I said to Scarlet Spidey I’d like add more dogfights for the girls but its hard. Did you read my answer to that comment?
Here’s a recap on what I said about that, would love some feedback on that idea:
One solution could have been to have Anna and Linn fly in Jeffrey’s squadron in the beginning and Linn”s failed maneuver is what gets Jeffrey Killed.

Thanks for all feedback Castor I really appreciate it since this is a project I would like to develop further beyond this pitch.

Svara

Castor juni 13, 2011 kl. 03:26

Yes bombers specifically designed to hunt submarines would drop depth charges at enemy submarines. I believe you mention P-51 Mustangs so I assume your main characters would using those. Hence that would leave Gretchen to be piloting a FW-190 or a ME-109, both not suitable for attacking submarines. I’m nitpicking ahah but this can easily be fixed by changing submarines to American B-17′s bombers or what not ;)

As far as settings, Southern England would be ideal. Say 1944 as the Allies begin strategic bombing of Germany. Gretchen wreaks havoc, shooting down tons of bombers?

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 06:21

Nice suggestions Castor, I’ll look it over when I have some time and try to incorporate it.

Svara

ruth juni 13, 2011 kl. 05:44

Hey Joel, I must’ve glanced over this too quickly that I missed the intro!! What, you killed off my boy after like 5 minutes??! I agree w/ Castor, we need to know just a bit more about Jeffrey before he’s offed. I mean, I realize the focus is on the girls but knowing more about Anna’s husband would add a lot to the emotional aspect of the film when she later mourn him. Either that or add some flashback scenes of them together :D

Svara

ruth juni 13, 2011 kl. 05:48

Oh I also want to mention that I LOVE the role you gave Dalton! Looks like he’s gonna have quite a bit of screen time. I wish there’d be scenes of Butler & Bale together but if there were one between Butler & Dalton, I’d be equally ecstatic! As you know, I drafted them as father and son in my first pitch.

I like your female cast, too, especially Sigourney! You definitely got my vote for Best Cast, Joel! ;)

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 06:03

hahah I almost thought you missed it somehow. You guys are on to something, I’ll try to do some changes where Jeffrey gets to live longer or appear in flashbacks. But I won’t let it interfere with the Bale flashback subplot because its there to be a very romantic nostalgic backdrop to the war when he plays with Linn in the plane learning her everything he knows about flying. Do I need to say this might be the happiest part for Christian Bale in forever. No bruting here I want him to be a loving father to his girls.

Unfortunately the boys will be kept separated like this even when I tweak it. I know a fan girl like you will be disapointed but I really want it to be film that focus on the females. If you have the time check out some of the pics from the exhibition in the flickr album in the bottom of the post those are some amazing pictures and captions. Thanks for reading Ruth!

Novroz juni 13, 2011 kl. 02:23

I am illiterate with war History…so I am not going to comment anything on the detail of the history. I didn’t know Castor knows history that much…cool!

I would definitely watch your movie,Joel…the cast alone made me want to watch it…you have Sigourney and Bale…great combination. And movie with a lot of bombings is a must watch for me. It also sounds like the kind of war movie that I enjoy, war movie with heart.

Svara

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 03:26

Thanks Novia. Yeah Castor’s such a war junkie. ;) I’m glad you like sigourney!

Svara

ruth juni 13, 2011 kl. 07:05

Hello again Joel, thanks for considering to at least give Butler a bit more screen time… all your female audience will thank you for that :D :D

Oh yeah, it’s a great role for Bale indeed. I too am tired of seeing him in all this dark, brooding roles… he seems obsessed w/ them lately even though he’s done some romantic parts before and he’s great in them.

I’ll check out the Flickr photos. I remember going to some airspace museums w/ my twin brothers growing up, for sure they both would LOVE to see your movie, too!

Svara

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 07:45

I’m also tired of Bale only being a bruting bad-ass.

I normally don’t like art exhibitions that much but this one was real informative and beautiful as you can see in the pictures.

Svara

Rich juni 13, 2011 kl. 08:58

I didn’t realize there were so many female WW2 pilots. That’s the kind of story that begs to be made into a movie.

Like your cast. How much of your story is fact-based?

Svara

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 11:23

I totally agree that this is the kind of film that really should be made and I hope that it can be done as well. Glad you like my cast.

Well to be honest I do exaggerate a bit for the purpose of the film. Most allied women flew transport planes. But Russia had two women who were Red Baronesque fighter pilots. The most famous one was Lydia Litvak also known as the White Rose of Stalingrad. She shot down 13 enemy planes and had one white rose painted on her chassi for each of the kills.
If you check the flickr set in the bottom of the post there are some pictures I took from the exhibition where you can read more on the correct background about these all women. I am fascinated by many of the histories about them one of them being about a pilot who survived the war but died a couple of years later when giving birth. Talk about anticlimactic.

Svara

Joel Burman juni 13, 2011 kl. 06:04

I really liked the idea to let Sigourney be the former veteran who joins them on the last mission. It doesn’t get more epic than that.
