Embedding video?

by Joel on 12 juli, 2011

Sorry for another meta post. I have had to swap my longer piece today for The Scene because issues with my video embed plugin. I’m using one called IEFY.desc its a YouTube embed plugin. Recently I have had major problems embedding clips where the embed function is not shut off. Since I use a lot of embeds I really need to find the ultimate plugin for this.

The optimal one would be able to embed not only from YouTube but also other sources like Vimeo etc. Please give me some suggestions in the comments.

Also, I’m considering changing theme. I am currently rnning Thesis but I’m not satisfied with it at all for the moment so feel free to throw in some Theme suggestions as well!

Thanks for reading guys and sorry for all meta/bickering posts hopefully I’ll get it to work better soon. Now I’m off on the beach but I’ll moderate my comments through the iPhone.

All I can suggest is the one I use and that is Fast Tube. All I have to do is get the URL from youtube and put it within [ and ] and bob is your uncle and it is embedded.

I don’t think it works from other sites though. Sorry

I don’t think you need a plugin for this (if you’re only looking for YouTube and Vimeo embed), you copy and paste the URL (without link or any format) into your post, and Wordpress would automatically change it to an embed.

The options to set it up it’s under your Wordpress Media options under Settings.

If you want to be able to do other embeds that doesn’t collide with iphones or ipads and use ”iframe” embedding, I’m using this plugin.

Amy, I do think so. I’m also tired of having to do a ton of testing all the time when I install plugins. Preferably I’d find one that cover all bases and work on most platforms (iPhone etc.) I’ll check out the one you are using as well.

Temamässigt är jag väldigt nöjd med Tarski, men du har ju möjlighet att välja lite friare.

Både och, det är lite roddigt att hitta free themes när man kör självhostat. Det är inte serverat på samma sätt som wordpress.com

LOL you just changed theme not too long ago! I think this looks good.

Actually that was just a layout change and a banner add. I have had Thesis on for eight months. However, you are probably right. I need to sit down with it calm and easily and browse through the options.

You use any plugin for your embeds?

No. Just the simple Embed code from YouTube. I don’t why there would be any need for that.

Hmmm I must have been caught between WP updates because YouTube embeds didn’t work properly a couple a months ago. I’ll check it tonight again.

Use the old code format, if you use the new ones which is Iframe based, you need to work in HTML or they will disappear every time you go to text-based editing.

Joel Burman juli 12, 2011 kl. 08:16

Thanks for bringing it up, thats exactly what happened. How do I switch/use old code format? I don’t find it on my writing tools in WP.

I switched to my current plug in because the issues with iFrame that you bring up.

Castor juli 13, 2011 kl. 01:30

In YouTube, where you get the embed code, there is the option to use the old format.

Joel Burman juli 13, 2011 kl. 01:36

Ah I’ll try that instead then. But whats the pros using iframe? I know the cons as we have spoken about in here… =O

Castor juli 13, 2011 kl. 11:36

It uses the new player.

I updated to 3.2.1 today and also installed tinyMCE and posting video is now a dream. Much better than FASTtube.

I don’t know why I have never used this before…such a n00b!!

amy juli 15, 2011 kl. 10:07

Joel, the old embed code doesn’t work (or at least is not supposed to work) on iPhones or iPads.

what you do with the new embed code is use it with the plugin I suggested.

Or like I said, you don’t need a plugin when embedding vimeo or youtube. Just pasting the URL of said video works.

Joel Burman juli 13, 2011 kl. 11:40

Thanks for letting me now Custie! I just upgraded to 3.2.1 myself to. I’ll check it out after getting back from Harry Potter tonight!

I think it was the addition of TinyMCE Advanced plug in that did it. Also I can add layers to posts and ruled lines…I have always wanted to do that!! LOL

I recomend trying that mce plugin (I’ll update the correct title when I get back to my computer), I’ts a real treat.

But isn’t it impossible to embed flash and screen it on iPhone and iPad?

Svara

amy juli 16, 2011 kl. 12:24

Well, the new embed code is supposed to be HTML5 friendly, so you can actually use it on iPad or iPhones.

Thanks this is a f*ckin jungle. But with the new code you mean the new youtube embed code = iFrame? or? I’ll check the link you posted tomorrow!

Svara

amy juli 16, 2011 kl. 04:15

yeah, the new embed code is with iframe.

I really don’t know the thought behind choosing iframe, to be honest. I had long ditched the practice of using iframes on websites, but all embed codes are using it again… and now one has to make one’s website ipad and iphone friendly.

What the plugin I suggested does is… allow iframes within wordpress. The only thing you need to do is change the to the [iframe code], and it works perfectly. It works with any flash code too.

Thats my reason for switching to the plug in I’m ranting on in this post. That it should show youtube clips properly and it does when its not malfunctioning. Unfortunately it doesnt show the clips when being in RSS mode which is not so good.

I wish the ”new” embed code would be iframe friendly to begin with. That would help a bunch but I guess youtube are google affiliated so they want most compatibility with their android phones and tablets.

I think the iframe issue is mostly with wordpress, it’s wordpress that renders the iframe code unusable and makes it go poof, and I think it may be because you don’t really need the code because you use paste a URL and it shows up.

In that case, pasting the URL is useful because the size of the player is dictated by Wordpress, so if you have a Mobile phone theme, all the players that render from a URL would fit whatever size you need it to be, instead of being the regular 560px wide.

However, if you want to customize the player, you do need the new embed code to work (especially for Vimeo).

The iframe plugin I poster above does show on RSS feed :)
