I’m not a list guy, hey I don’t even grade the films in the posts in here that can be mistaken for reviews. Still I decided to scramble together my own top ten of the year mostly because I’m a fierce advocate of blockbusters and commercial films and I’d thought it would be a good diversion from all the other lists containing the same 25-30 films.
I have gone by the imdb release date for a film which for instance makes Senna illegible. I’m also including Swedish films on the list. The format of ranking eleven films come mainly from the fact that I started this post before seeing a film that would later land on it. I also find it appropriate to have eleven films on a Best of 2011 list.
Here are the ones I haven’t had the chance to see yet so if you come here to rant about the Artist or Beginners save your keyboards for other blogs and yes I know its a bunch of them and a list loses credibility when not having seen such and such film etc, bla bla…
Beginners, The Artist, Young Adult (want to see it real bad), Midnight in Paris, Attack the Block, The Muppets, The Skin I live In, Take Shelter, Incendies, 50/50, Melancholia, Super 8, Shame, We need to talk about Kevin
Honorable Mention – Tree of Life
I got to say that I feel caught in the middle of the Tree of Life ranters and ravers. Sure it looks good, but it also drags a whole lot but I’ve seen a lot worse than this at the cinema 2011. However, had I not been fore warned by seeing Thin Red Line at the cinema (the closest I’ve ever been of a leaving a film mid through) I’d probably had been a lot more disappointed. Just wanted to throw it out there.
11. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The original Planet of the Apes franchise (5 features between 1968-1973) is probably my favorite franchise but after the total Tim Burton fiasco remake I didn’t expect very much from this one. I got to say it was a positive surprise holding up better than I could wish for. My favorite part was not the big action finale but the tense build-up that was the first half of it where some scenes even dipped its toes in the darkness of the Conquest of the Planet of the Apes which its a re-hash of.
10. Captain America
Time for another surprise, I was a huge Spidey and X-men fan boy growing up but never really got into the whole Avengers thing (beside following them in Secret Wars). As with the Apes rehash I was pleasantly surprised by it. I really liked the aspect when they turned the Captain into a rallying propaganda machine instead of having him fight in the battles.
This was a film I didn’t know of until a week before its theatrical release and its also the first Swedish film on the list. Försvunnen is clearly inspired by Steven Spielberg’s the Duel and in this case thats a great compliment not all comparisons between modern films and classic 70′s are. The story is very simplistic, its about a women relocating to the north of Sweden who is being followed when she is on the road. Its being sold internationally by sales agent Yellow Affair.
8. Soul Surfer
OK, here we go, if more people had actually seen this film I’d be afraid of a sh*t storm of comments. However, knowing the blogging crowd I’m certain people will let me know what they think about it without having seen it. To me its one of the most underrated films of last year.
7. Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is the reason this list consists of eleven entries. To me the highlights of the film was the comedic acts (the airplane sequence!!!!!!) rather than the notion that this is supposed to be a ground breaking film for women. I don’t agree on that since most of the main cast in the Bridesmaid group still play very stereotypical characters but very funny ones. Definitively check it out possibly the funniest film of 2011.
6. Whats your number
I know 95% of you guys think I’m joking about this one but I got to say I was really entertained by it. Sure it was a tad predictable but so what????? Not all stereotypical rom-coms suck (I’d bet you hate this one Castor)!!!! One last thing I’d like to bring up is that I really like how the Anna Faris character feels genderless in the fact that she gets to behave like most slutty (sloppy) guys do in rom-coms and she isn’t really judged by it in the end. To be honest I felt this one probably was more revolutionary than Bridesmaids. Hows that for a final conclusion!
I’ve decided to split this list into two parts because the length it took me to even come this far! Let me know what you think so far if you are calm enough to be able to scribble some thoughts down. Also if you have guesses on the top five that I’ll hopefully publish tomorrow let me know!

Haven’t seen Captain America on anyone else’s list, but it was definitely a fun film! Made me look forward to seeing the Avengers ever so much more! I’m one of the Tree of Life lovers, which surprised me a little as I only saw it on DVD last month, and went in very cautious, ready to be disappointed. Looking forward to the rest of the list!
Thanks for stopping by Ruth. I’m surprised that Cap was a surprise. I thought people would would be surprised mainly by Soul Surfer and Whats your number.
As we both know you and I have quite different preferenes. But it’s difficult to compare. As you point out you haven’t seen some of my favorites, like I haven’t watched some of yours, such as Captain America and What’s your number?. (Yes, I’m prejudiced.)
I can agree with you that The Rise of the Planet of the Apes was pretty wonderful. I was a tad disappointed with Bridesmaids, but The Tree of Life was quite an experience, even though I couldn’t completely wrap my head around it.
Looking forward to see next part!
Well I really have to recommend all Swedish films on the list to you since I do think they are a huge step forward compared to last years releases.
Nice list Joel.
You may be the first person I’ve seen who is lukewarm on Tree of Life… typically it evokes a stronger response in either direction.
I haven’t seen ”Whats your number” so I’ll cut you some slack
Bring on the top 5!!
Yep but I’m sure if I hadn’t seen Thin Red Line I’d probably been on the streets with my pitchfork ranting about it.
Interesting bunch of films Joel…certainly not the sorts of films I’ve seen on other top 2011 lists. I did really like Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I was left disappointed by Bridesmaids though – felt it was over-hyped.
Agreed on Bridesmaids I really enjoyed the comedic elements of it but it wasn’t even half as groundbreaking as people tend to hail it for being.
A very Joel-y list indeed
When I started to search my google doc archive I realised that I hade actaullay seen a few movies from 2011 that clearly topped C&A and Rise… was one of them. Not only was it good compared to the train wreck that was Burton’s take on the whole thing, but it really managed to stand on it’s own two legs and no knuckles scraping the ground. I’m looking forward to the rest.
Oh my am I that predictable. Can’t wait too see your verdict on my Top 5 then. =) Have you seen the original Planet of the Apes films?
I’m not sure…
I only have clear recollections of the first one in any case.
Any list that includes Tree of Life mixed with Bridesmaids and Soul Surfer is a good mixed list.
Indeed it is and I’m dying of curiosity to find out what you think of my top five.
Woo hoo, glad to see Captain America on your list! I put that on my honorable mentions but it sure is a good movie, entertaining and engaging and makes you anticipate The Avengers even more.
I haven’t seen Soul Surfer but I kind of know people hate it because of the spirituality aspect which is silly because that IS the story of the real protagonist. I’ll be sure to rent it soon.
I felt that people seemed to judge Soul Surfer by its cover (trailer). The same goes for Whats Your Number and Real Steel. I think people just liked hacking away at them than even seeing the films in the first place.
Interesting to see What’s Your Number on this list. I enjoy a good romantic comedy, but tend to watch them more at home than in theaters, so I might check this out when it starts playing in infinite repeat mode on tv.
Still haven’t had a chance to check out Captain Imperialism…. uh, I mean America, other than the clip with the song in it, although if the rest has the same feel I think I’ll like it.
Tree Of Life and Apes will almost certainly end up near the top of my Lions list.
I thought Captain Imperialism was quite low on the eccentric nationalist flag waving type of stuff that we are used to seeing in that kind of film.
I SAW SOUL SURFER!
Hah.
You can’t get anything past me Joel
Unique group of films.
Well Sam to be honest it feels like you and I are the only ones in the film blogosphere that have actually seen it and I know you didn’t enjoy it as much as I did.
”Unique group of films” I don’t really know how to interpret that… hahah
Have seen nr 10 and 11 and they were good popcornmovies but i liked X-men better. At my list for the best movies i´ve seen during 2011 Rom-coms? No way i´ve given up on that genre.
I hate X-men first class but you know that already. =) Actually you might want to check out Bridesmaids even though it technically is a Rom-Com.
Fun list Joel. Glad you did give the Tree of Life an honorable mention. I guess you didn’t hate it as much as you made it sound on AM
I haven’t seen What’s Your Number but certainly it looks like the kind of rom-com I would despise aahah. I’m getting Friends with Benefits (the one with Kunis/Timberlake) tomorrow so I will see what that one can do for me.
I’ve actually heard that Friends with Benefit is the good one of those sibling films with the same plot but different cast. Whats your number is in the same formula as Leap Year but way better I’d say.
Yea it’s definitely better than the one with Natalie Portman, which was absolutely atrocious. Doesn’t work that great but Mila Kunis is super charming and Timberlake is half-decent enough.
You really got to have a love/hate relationship to romcoms. I actually dare you to check out What’s Your Number.
